NBHSAF Presents 2026 Scholarship at New Berlin West Honors Night

A Night That Reminded Us Why This Scholarship Matters

On May 27, 2026, the New Berlin High Schools Alumni Foundation had the privilege of presenting its annual scholarship during the New Berlin West Senior Honors Night held at the New Berlin West Performing Arts Center.

With hundreds of parents, family members, teachers, administrators, and students gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2026, the evening recognized students preparing to take the next step in their future—whether through college, technical education, apprenticeships, or careers in the skilled trades.

For the Foundation, it was also an opportunity to recognize a student who truly represents the values behind our scholarship program.

This year’s scholarship recipient was Max Psicihulis, who is preparing to begin a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator apprentice.

While moments like this are exciting, I’ll admit something most people in the audience probably didn’t realize: standing backstage waiting to speak always makes me a nervous wreck.

The presenters wait in a dark backstage area with one dim light overhead—hardly the ideal setting to rehearse remarks or calm your nerves before walking on stage. By the time my name was called, I was feeling every bit as nervous as the students receiving awards that night.

And once I started speaking, I could feel it. A few extra “umms” between thoughts. Trying to settle my nerves while also making sure I properly represented both the Foundation and the student we had selected.

But then came the moment that made all of it worth it.

As I reached the final line of the presentation—“I am proud to present the New Berlin High Schools Alumni Foundation 2026 Scholarship to Max Psicihulis”—the audience erupted in applause and cheers.

And as Max walked toward the stage, he had one of the biggest smiles I think I’ve ever seen.

That moment said everything.

It reflected not only his excitement, but also the pride and support surrounding him. Later that evening during the reception, I had the opportunity to meet Max’s parents, who were just as proud as he was. Even his younger sister was beaming with excitement over her brother’s accomplishment.

Those moments matter.

They remind us that scholarships are about far more than financial support. They represent years of hard work, determination, responsibility, and the support systems that help students reach these milestones.

Max is the real deal.
